Rust or Chocolate?
An orange-red brown, more vivid and lighter than chocolate.
The color of iron oxide.
Science
Rust is iron oxide, the same family of compounds that colors red ochre, sienna and bricks. Mars is red for the same reason: its dust is rich in iron oxide.
Design
Some steel is meant to rust. Weathering steel grows a tight skin of rust that protects the metal underneath, which is why Richard Serra built his sculptures from it and Antony Gormley used it for the Angel of the North.
Kin
- Ochre: Both are iron oxides: one grown on metal, one dug from the earth
- Brick: Both owe their red to iron oxide
- Sienna: Burnt sienna is iron oxide too, reddened by heat
