Brick or Rust?
Darker and duller than rust, and a touch redder.
The color of fired clay bricks.
Science
Bricks are red because of iron. Fired with plenty of air, the iron in clay becomes red iron oxide, kin to red ochre and rust. Starve the kiln of oxygen and the same clay can come out dark blue-grey, the way engineering bricks are made.
Kin
- Terracotta: Both are fired clay; terracotta just means 'baked earth'
- Celadon: Same iron, different fire: oxygen makes red, its lack makes celadon green
- Rust: Both owe their red to iron oxide
