Forest green or Kelly green?
Darker and deeper than kelly green.
History
Forest green is recorded from 1810, but England had an older woodland green: Lincoln green, wool dyed blue with woad, the European indigo, and then yellow with weld, the cloth Robin Hood's men wear in the ballads. It was the cheaper choice: in 1182, Lincoln scarlet cost more than twice as much per ell as Lincoln green.
Kin
- Scarlet: Lincoln's two famous cloths; scarlet cost twice as much in 1182
- Indigo: Lincoln green began as woad blue, the same dye molecule as indigo
- Hunter green: Another green named for life in the woods
