Kelly green or Emerald?
A vivid grass green, yellower than emerald.
After the common Irish surname Kelly; the name dates from the early 1900s. Green was worn on St Patrick's Day by the 1680s; his official blue came later, in 1783.
Culture
Kelly green is named after Kelly, one of Ireland's most common surnames. Ireland has been the Emerald Isle since William Drennan's 1795 poem 'When Erin First Rose'. Officially, though, Ireland's heraldic color is blue: the gold harp sits on azure, the knights of the Order of St Patrick (1783) wore sky blue, and the all-Ireland football team played in blue until 1931.
Kin
- Emerald: Ireland is the Emerald Isle, a phrase from a 1795 poem
- Orange: Ireland's flag sets green beside orange, with white for peace between
- Sky blue: Ireland's knights of St Patrick wore sky blue, not green
- Bottle green: British racing green began as a salute to Ireland in 1903
