Petrol or Teal?
Darker and bluer than teal.
Language
Petrol blue, a deep, inky teal, is mostly a British and European name, from petrol, the British word for gasoline. Oddly, its earliest record, from 1913, is in an American newspaper. Why petrol is unclear: maybe the tint of fuel, maybe blue-dyed products like paraffin. The idea that it's a misspelling of petrel, the seabird, has no support.
Kin
- Steel blue: Both named after industrial materials
- Teal: The deeper, inkier cousin of teal
