Apricot or Peach?
A deeper, stronger orange than peach.
Language
Apricot and precocious share a root. Latin praecoquum meant early-ripening, because apricots ripen before peaches. The word passed into Greek, then Arabic as al-barquq, then Catalan, and reached English in the 1500s as abrecock.
Kin
- Peach: The early-ripening cousin of the 'Persian apple'
- Aubergine: Another food word that reached English through Arabic and Spanish
