Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh

Palette

Painted in Arles in August 1888; it then hung in the guest room Van Gogh got ready for Gauguin. He called it a picture all in yellow, and wrote that his sunflowers used the three chrome yellows, yellow ochre and Veronese green and nothing else. Notice the range inside that one color: from a pale greenish yellow background to mustard and brown in the seed heads. Chrome yellow is light-sensitive; research on the Amsterdam repeat of this picture found parts of it already darkening.
